013 – Ships Adrift

This is a piece I created using only samples of a fog horn and a train whistle. Ships Adrift was created for the Disquiet Junto, which I posted about and did a piece for in the entry 008 – Grey. This is the second project and the requirements were that we could only use these two samples:

Fog horn sample by Schaarsen: http://www.freesound.org/people/schaarsen/sounds/69663/

Train whistle sample by Ecodios: http://www.freesound.org/people/ecodios/sounds/119963/

I did a lot of eq’ing, pitch-shifting, and processing of the sounds. My main tools were: Logic, KT Granulator, EQ, and the Space Designer Reverb. The picture you see was created using the Crossprocess and Snapseed apps on the iPhone. This was another good example of using limitations to foster creative projects. Thanks go to Marc Weidenbaum of disquiet.com for coming up with the assignment. The piece I ended up creating reminds me of the haunting and beautiful Disintegration Loops by William Basinski, which I would check out if you haven’t already. Here is ‘Ships Adrift’ :
