My wife Rosalie and I are in Sharon, Pennsylvania visiting her parents this weekend. I wanted to return to Shenango Lake and try out my Jez Riley French hydrophone. The first sound in this post is the hydrophone on the shore in shallow water with the waves crashing, with a little bit of sand washing over the mic. It was pretty windy today. This recording is the best one I got using the hydrophone and I think I need to work with it more to get a better sound. I listen to hydrophone recordings that Jez Riley French or other people have done and I know these can be way better. Next time, I think I will boost the gain some more and put the hydrophone further out in the water. I’m excited to continue using it, especially when things warm up in the spring.

The second recording was made using the microphones on my Zoom H4n. I used a Rode windshield and improvised with my coat to shield the mic a little more because it was so windy today. I may return to tomorrow in the morning to try again with the hydrophone and field recorder.
