252 – Still

This track is a transformation, in honor of painter Clyfford Still, of a sample of J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2, II. Andante, culled from this recording: http://archive.org/details/J.S.BachBrandenburgConcertoNo2

I created a subtle drone from the material in the beginning of the recording and also made use of the piano part. I bussed some of the drone and piano into a track with a granulator, pitched up 2 octaves to add some interest in the higher registers since most of the material was murky sounding. The mix is intentionally low and meant to be listened to that way to provide a ‘sonic wallpaper’. There are also some textures created from sampling distorted and bit crushed parts of the audio.

Normally I provide my own artwork for my projects, but I thought that it would be appropriate to use this untitled piece by Still, dated 1957 from the collection of the San Francisco Museum of Modern art (sfmoma.org).
