093 – Iron Curtain


 
This is a piece created for the 13th Disquiet Junto project. We were given stems from the first movement of classical ensemble Wild Up’s recording of the Chamber Symphony, Op. 110a, by Dimitri Shostakovich. We could only use the stems as source material.
 
I used a very short part of the recording to create my piece, reversing it and also layering it. I also employed some subtle pitch shifting and granulation to parts of the sound. There is some distortion at the end of the piece. Reading about Shostakovich’s life and the Soviet Union, I wanted to create some sense of deterioration.
