024 – Argeiphontes Lyre

I wasn’t exactly sure what I was going to do today for this blog, but Charlie Visnic who has a blog called The B-Roll (one of the thing-a-day blogs that inspired me to do this project) recommended I check out Argeiphontes Lyre, an application that has some SoundHack-like functions. While I thought SoundHack was slightly mysterious, Argeiphontes Lyre is very cryptic.  The creator is Akira Rabelais, a protégé of Tom Erbe at CalArts (he created SoundHack).  Rabelais’ website is interesting too – you have to click around and you will even find Homer’s Odyssey amongst other curiousities.  I don’t think it’s supposed to make any sense at all, but who knows?  When you go to the help menu in Argeiphontes Lyre, it takes you to the I Ching.
 
In addition to mangling sounds, the application also generates images.  The above image is something I generated using the “L’attraction étrange” image/pattern generator.  I wasn’t able to get any pleasant sounds out this application yet, but I’ll keep playing around with it. Definitely check this software out – it’s freeware and it’s kind of fun to poke around with. It also comes with some other things, like samples from an 808 drum machine, a PDF on Molecular Rotation and Vibration, and other oddities.
