287 – Pedal Building

Today I finished this pedal that I’ve been wanting to build for a while now. It was inspired by Marcus Fischer’s minimalist pedal on Dust Breeding, his blog. When it’s switched on, sound passes only when the footswitch is held down. When it’s switched off, the pedal does nothing. This is a stutter (or sometimes called a killswitch) pedal.

The last pedal I made was a Big Muff replica that I constructed from a kit. That one had a pre-drilled enclosure. This was the first time I’ve ever drilled the holes on an enclosure and surprisingly, it wasn’t hard at all. For some reason, I thought you would need some heavy equipment, but it’s not needed for the hammond style aluminum ones. I found a great youtube channel produced by a guy named John, explaining how to best handle drilling. He really explains things well…his videos are nicely done. I also found these titanium step bits on amazon for only 13 bucks! Highly recommended and I don’t know why I didn’t find these sooner. Another great new resource I stumbled upon was Beavis Audio. I may make another one of these with a slightly simpler design, where you press the footswitch to kill the sound.
