224 – Reel to Reel

Recently, I sold my MicroKorg in order to raise some funds for equipment. I wasn’t using it very much at all in my music. The last thing I used it on was Transporter, which is on my Waiting album. This is my new reel to reel recorder, an Akai 4000DS MkII. It seems to be a consumer(ish) model, with 4 track capabilities, but with a catch – it can play 2 tracks at a time. You can switch it over to the other stereo pair of tracks if you want. This might be handy for having two sets of loops or I could possibly flip the tape to reverse the playback. I’ve wanted to get something like this for a while now to set up some tape loops, influenced by the work of Robert Fripp and Brian Eno.
