209 – Noise to Signal

For this Disquiet Junto project, the assignment was to take some recorded silence and turn it into a piece. It is an interesting concept that John Cage explored, especially in his piece, 4’33.

To achieve this, I recorded the input of my MOTU 828 interface and then normalized the audio track. This gave me a very noisy and hissy sounding file. This is hinted at in the beginning of this piece and fades away.

I manipulated the audio using Paulstretch to extract tones and frequencies, which were transposed and granulated using KT Granulator. I also used the bitcrusher in Logic on a track to add some texture to the piece.
