Instagr/am/bient

Instagr/am/bient is a project that was commissioned by Marc Weidenbaum, who writes disquiet.com, an ambient/electronica blog. Marc writes in the liner notes:

“Photos shared with the popular software Instagram are usually square in format, not unlike the cover to a record album. The format leads inevitably to a question: if a given image were the cover to a record album, what would the album’s music sound like?”

I contributed a piece called ‘Sundown’ for a photo taken by a musician named Steiner. A photo I took was also sent to a musician named Dead Wood and he wrote a piece for it as well. There are some beautiful images and music in this collection and I am happy to be a part of it.  The whole thing is a free download (25 tracks + a beautiful PDF) and details can be found here.

On ‘Sundown’ I used field recordings of fire layered with a series of drones and an electric piano. The drones were created by a lapharp with contact mic, the Exs24 in Logic (using the very basic sine tones in the default patch), and the deep sound was created from a recording I made of a metal bowl.
