My great-uncle gave me all of his vinyl records this past week since he’s moving to a different condo and never listens to them anymore. It’s a pretty good jazz collection – a box of 33 1/3 records and a whole bunch of really old 78s. Lots of classics from Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson…I’m pretty excited to have them. I started going through them today, cleaning them up. Some are really dirty/dusty, so I decided to create some recordings of the surface noise, which I plan on using as a texture in my music. You can listen to it here and I’ve made a 24-bit aiff file available for download too. I sampled silent parts of 2 vinyl records and put them together in this recording. Izotope makes a vinyl plugin you can use to recreate these sounds, but there’s nothing like the real thing. One last thing – I’m going to try to write more on this blog to explain what I’m up to, lessons I’m learning from this, and other things like that. I think it will be more interesting for other people to read, but also for me when I look back at this year long project.
