084 – Modern Folk (cut and paste)

The Disquiet Junto project (the 12th) this week involves using two recordings, both made in 1928, and transforming them without stretching, pitching, or distorting them. In the other shared sample projects, most of us have done something to alter the sound of the original samples, so this is yet another exercise in limitations.

When I heard the recordings that we had to use, I knew that I wanted to cut up the guitar to create new rhythms and patterns. I found that when cutting up recordings, if you use the transients, you can mine and carve little percussive fragments out of almost anything. In creating this piece, I was inspired by the group The Books. They have a folk influence, even though they use electronics and samples in their music. Both of the songs we were to use have ‘rural’ sensibilities. One is American (southern) and one is Slovakian. I did not use any processing at all for this project (no compression, eq, etc), so all you are hearing is the audio chopped up and arranged.
